Holiday Tournament Recaps and All-Tournament Teams

RED DEVIL HOLIDAY CLASSIC - WOMEN

LONGVIEW— The final weekend of the year and preseason play did not disappoint. The first day of play featured a 96-92 upset of #2 Umpqua by a high scoring Whatcom team. After two close semi-final games, host Lower Columbia and the North Idaho Cardinals wound up in a defensive slugfest that came down to the wire. After a go-ahead 3-pointer by Emily Packham of LCC, NIC’s Keara Simpson sank the eventual game-winning 3-pointer with 20 seconds left for a 50-47 final. Simpson lead the Cardinals with 15 points and 6 rebounds. For Lower Columbia, Nizhoni Wheeler paced all scorers with 18. Kenya Lorton also added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. North Idaho improves to 10-2 on the year while LCC drops to 8-7.

CARDINAL HOLIDAY CLASSIC - WOMEN

MOUNT VERNON— The Cardinal Holiday Classic round robin tournament produced 2 undefeated East region teams in Spokane and Big Bend. Although they did not square off against each other for a rematch of the Everett Classic, both teams looked solid in their wins. Spokane needed a last second lay-in to beat Everett but then went on to beat Olympic and Bellevue despite missing starting guard Koyama Young. Jessica Olson picked up the slack averaging 20 points per game. For Big Bend, both Abby Broadbent and Miranda Johnson averaged 17 a piece in wins over Skagit Valley, Olympic and Bellevue. They will take on the Sasquatch at home on January 5th during league play.
