Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 yearly, depending on qualifications and experience.

Shoreline Community College hosts six athletic teams as part of the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC). Shoreline's athletic facilities include a fitness center, track, batting cages, a study hall for student athletes, and the gymnasium. The gym is also home to the Physical Education department, as well as intramural and wellness activities.
 
The Director of Athletics and Physical Education reports to the Dean of Student Support & Success and provides leadership and direction to the Athletic, Intramural and Physical Education programs at the College. This responsibility includes program planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation. The Director ensures that the programs operate in accordance with the mission and goals of the College and comply with Northwest Athletic  Conference rules as well as Title IX requirements.
 
Primary responsibilities include the following:
 

  • Provide administrative direction for Athletics, Intramurals, and Physical Education programs.
  • Ensure Athletic/PE programs operate in accordance with the mission, goals, and policies of the College and the NWAC. 
  • Promote an environment supportive of the College mission, vision, and strategic plan. 
  • Support student-centered services, equity, and inclusive excellence within Athletics/PE. 
  • Ensure programs and facilities follow federal civil rights laws, including but not limited to Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Develop, direct the implementation of, and monitor goals, objectives, protocols, procedures, and work standards, ensuring legal requirements and College, Athletic, Intramural, Physical Education programs' requirements are met. Lead area in continuous improvement practice, including annual completion of area reviews, assessment, and goal focus.
  • Prepare and administer budget(s), including determination of staffing and operational requirements; approve and monitor expenditures.
  • Work with all campus constituencies to ensure College-wide campus needs are met.
  • Directly, or through subordinates, direct and supervise staff/part-time faculty; recruit, train, coach, and evaluate/ensure performance, building an effective team that is responsive to the needs of students and of the College.
  • Prioritize and allocate resources; conduct assessment, including regular review and evaluation of programs to ensure maximum service delivery and achievement of learning and program service outcomes.
  • Administer and explain College policies and procedures; resolve issues, ensuring mutual respect for different perspectives and communication styles.
  • Represent Athletics, Intramurals and Physical Education programs within the College, in local, state, and national organizations and associations.
  • Attend meetings and conferences to ensure Athletic/Intramural/Physical Education programs' needs and concerns are represented and resolved. Lead, work with, and serve on committees and councils as appropriate.
  • Work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude and sense of humor.
  • Prepare and/or direct the preparation of a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures, ordinance requirements, and other materials; direct the maintenance of working and official Athletics, Intramurals and Physical Education program files. Maintain athlete records and their retention in compliance with applicable federal, state, athletic association, and College requirements, including FERPA.
  • Keep current with laws, regulations, and technology that may affect programs, operations, and compliance; recommend and implement timely policy and procedural changes as required.
  • Ensure the coordination of course scheduling, course construction timelines and procedures, faculty assignment, and payroll processes in coordination with Student Learning, Human Resources, and Enrollment Services.
  • Evaluate and mentor part-time faculty and staff; promote faculty and staff professional development.
  • Participate in and oversee the selection, hiring, and other personnel decisions associated with faculty and staff.
  • Mediate faculty and student issues, grievances, and appeals.
  • Manage and ensure applicable provisions of negotiated faculty and classified employees bargaining agreements are in compliance for area.
  • Participate in professional development as appropriate/designated, at the College and through professional associations or other opportunities.  
  • Serve on committees, attend meetings, and support other College initiatives, as designated.
  • Perform other duties as assigned (of a similar nature or level).

Required Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field 
  • Three (3) years of experience leading athletics and/or physical education activities


Knowledge Of: 

  • Operational practices applicable to Athletics, Intramural Programs and/or Physical Education.
  • Principles and practices of effective staff/volunteer supervision and management. 
  • Budget management/reconciliation best practices. 
  • Family Education Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA), Title IX, and other statutes relevant to area.
  • Policy development and implementation.
  • Computer applications to be able to use systems applicable to Athletics, Intramurals, and Physical Education programs and relevant college/employee activities.
  • Techniques for effective presentations and communication in a multicultural environment.

 
 Skill In: 

  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness. 
  • Effectively supporting diverse participant populations such as underrepresented minorities, first generation, low-income, veterans, and students with disabilities. 
  • Providing leadership; motivating students, employees, and colleagues.
  • Supervising and evaluating staff, directly and through subordinate supervisors.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels.
  • Development of PE curricula, instructional practices, and learning outcomes. 
  • Time management, multi-tasking, and coordination of work/activities with partners.
  • Developing/directing departmental activities in alignment with College goals.
  • Preparing clear/ concise written materials resulting in effective communication.
  • Handling difficult and sensitive situations, using sound judgment within legal guidelines.
  • Effectively communicating with individuals at all levels inside and outside of the College.
  • Keeping current with and applying information/technology from a variety of resources.
